Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
