Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
