The United States Pledges a Substantial Aid Package, Delivering a Direct Ultimatum to United Nations.
With an announcement that combines generosity with a firm ultimatum, the United States has committed $2 billion to support UN emergency relief efforts. However, this aid was accompanied by a stark admonition for the international body: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Major Announcement During Broader Budget Reductions
The funding announcement was made amid substantial reductions in US funding for global aid. Additional reductions are expected from other major contributors including European nations. The official, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the announcement together with the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will save countless lives," said the UN's humanitarian chief. Yet, this sum is only a fraction of the United States' traditional contributions, which previously totaled around $17 billion just a few years ago.
Aid Accompanied by Strings Attached
The latest American funding comes with without restrictions. The money is focused on just 17 countries, such as Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Significantly, Yemen and Afghanistan are explicitly denied funding.
The representative explained this decision by citing concerns that in Afghanistan, aid money were being diverted to the Taliban. "President Trump will never tolerate a single penny of taxpayers' money supporting terrorist groups," he asserted.
Furthermore, the stipulations explicitly rule out funding for initiatives focused on global warming, which were described as not "life saving" and not in "the US interest."

Issuing a blunt warning, the US official warned the UN that it must "change or face irrelevance." He stated that the US "coffers will not support those organizations that seek to return to the old system."
