The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
