The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
